This blog describes my experience using an eSim on my iPhone.
I have been travelling a lot lately and wondered if there is a better option than enabling roaming with my local telco or buying a local sim in the country I was visiting.
You can now install a software version of your SIM card on most modern phones. Thus, after installing the Airalo app on my iPhone I was ready to try this out.

I bought a Fijian eSim that cost less than the OneNZ weekly plan. This was data only plan. They did not offer calling or text but who was I going to call in Fiji anyway.

After installing the eSIM I saw two eSims one for my old SIM(Primary) and one for the new eSIM(I called Fiji).

I choose the “Primary” for iMessage so i could still use this with my AppleID.
I choose ‘Fiji’ for cellular and mobile data.
I also had to configure iMessage as shown below.

I found this worked well for internet browsing. I was disappointing that iMessages still went through OneNZ and I got charged $0.92. I had thought it would use my Mobile data. The saving on the weekly prepay roaming was marginal.
I will try this again when I go the U.S.A. which offers voice and text options too. I guess you get a physical number there. I am not sure how this will work.
